Career Evolution

Brees served as Doug Flutie’s backup quarterback during his first season. Flutie started all 16 games that season, while Brees was the backup quarterback. Brees made his debut in the professional football league on November 4, 2001, when he faced off against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8 of the season. In order to provide Flutie, who had sustained a concussion, with relief, he entered the game himself.

It was his first touchdown throw of his career, which he completed to Freddie Jones for a distance of 20 yards, and he ended with 221 passing yards. The only game that Brees played in as a rookie was the one that was played versus the Chiefs.

As opposed to Doug Flutie, Brees was selected as the starting quarterback for the 2002 season on August 19, 2002. There were sixteen games that he started for the Chargers. With a 6–1 start to the season, the Chargers had a strong start to the season, but they struggled down the stretch, finishing with a record of 2–7 during the last nine games to end with an 8–8 record. The 2002 season came to a close with him having thrown for 3,284 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions completed.
