As a result of the abuse she experienced at school, Ashley encountered problems quite quickly. Her conditions included Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia. By the time she was 14 years old, she had already been the target of sexual advances from older males. Because of these occurrences, Ashley’s mother developed an extremely cautious attitude.
She went so far as to pay Ashley’s younger sisters to yell out “Mom! Mom!” if they spotted an older guy approaching Ashley. At one point, she even paid them financially. As a result, she had further psychological problems.
A talent agency discovered she at the age of twelve while she was shopping at a small mall in Nebraska. The agent recommended Ashley’s mother to submit some of her daughter’s photographs to a modeling agency. Ashley’s career as a model was just beginning at this time. Various publications and billboards featured Ashley in the years leading up to her graduation from Lincoln Southwest High School in 2005. To begin her career as a full-time model, she quickly relocated to New York City.
Because of her atypical body form, she had a hard time finding work when she was just starting out in the modeling industry. She was informed that she would never be able to go beyond the role of catalog girl during the first few years of her career, during which she was offered the opportunity to appear in catalogs. Very quickly, she received an offer from Ford Models. Unfortunately, Ford discontinued its plus-size division shortly after. This dealt a significant blow to Ashley, leading her to join IMG, another leading modeling agency.

During the year 2013, she made a short foray into the world of fashion design. Addition Elle, a plus-size clothing boutique in Canada, commissioned her to develop a lingerie chain for the company. During the same year, she appeared in Made, a reality program that airs on MTV.
In the show, she played the role of a coach for a plus-size model who was aspiring to become a model. The pre-fall collection and beauty pictorial that she appeared in for Harper’s Bazaar magazine in May of 2014. The Quebec edition of Elle then featured her on its cover.
Her involvement in the Swimsuit for All campaign led to an advertisement in the swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated magazine in 2015. The swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated featured her on its cover the following year. In the annals of the publication’s history, she made history by being the first plus-size model to accomplish this achievement. The same year, she appeared in the music video for DNCE’s song “Toothbrush”.
Both the Miss USA 2016 and the Miss Universe 2016 pageants featured as a backstage host. The following year, she continued to do the same duties for each of the competitions. Furthermore, she has served as a judge for the talent competition program America’s Next Top Model, a network feature on VH1.
