He led the United States National Team in scoring in the 2008 Olympics, which helped them win the gold medal. His rehabilitation lasted for many months. At the beginning of the 2008–2009 season, Wade was once again a member of the starting lineup. For the first time since Alvan Adams in 1976–1977, Wade became the second player in NBA history to record at least 40 points, 10 assists, and 5 blocks in a single game. Wade accomplished this feat early in that season. For the fifth consecutive year, he received a selection to play in the All-Star Game.

This made him the fourth player in the history of the National Basketball Association to score at least 50 points in a game that his team lost by at least 20 points. While playing in the very following game, Wade set a new career best with 16 assists, in addition to scoring 31 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. Wade succeeded Wilt Chamberlain as the only player to record 15 or more assists after scoring 50 or more points. Wade became the second player to do it.

Two games later, Wade matched a club record by scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter of the game against the New York Knicks, which resulted in a victory for the team by a score of 120–115. Wade finished the game with a total of 46 points, including 10 assists, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 blocked shots. Overall, he shot 55% from the field and made 46 field goals. During the last 50 minutes of play, Wade ended the game with 48 points, 71.4% shooting, 12 assists, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 blocks. He also finished with 12 assists. Two games later, Wade became the Heat’s all-time top scorer in triple overtime against the Utah Jazz. He did this by surpassing Alonzo Mourning, who had previously held the title. In addition to his 10 rebounds, 9 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks, Wade concluded that particular triumph with a total of 50 points. The final score was 140–129.
