She obtained employment as an extra on television series like Living Single when Hill relocated to Los Angeles and began working in the entertainment industry. After meeting the Black Eyed Peas backstage at a BMI showcase in 1995, she decided to become a member of the band. Will.i.am’s record company, I Am Music, which is an imprint of Interscope Records, was another label that she signed with.
When the Black Eyed Peas were approached to play on Soul Train in 1998, Hill was finally able to fulfill her childhood ambition of becoming a performer on the show. The year 1998 was the year when Hill acquired a solo contract with Interscope Records; nevertheless, she ultimately decided to release the album on her own.
Hill rejected Interscope’s efforts to over-sexualize her image as the merger between PolyGram and Universal Music Group, which is the parent business of Interscope, was taking full effect. She departed the band in the year 2000, and Fergie took over as the new member in the year 2002.
