Following a period of three years at MSNBC, Holt was offered a position as a replacement anchor for NBC Nightly News and for the morning program entitled Today. He was given the post of full-time weekend anchor for NBC Nightly News in 2007, and he continued to serve in that capacity until 2015.
It was in February of that year that Holt was given the position of temporary anchor of the weekday NBC Nightly News. This came about because the regular anchor, Brian Williams, was suspended for making assertions that were not truthful about his role in a number of different incidents. Holt was given the role as permanent anchor of the program in the month of June.
In addition, Holt was a host for a number of other special events for NBC and assisted in covering the sports desk during the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. On top of that, he was the host of Dateline from 2006 until 2015 and the coanchor of Weekend Today from 2006 until 2015. During the 2016 presidential debates in the United States, Holt served as a moderator.
