In 2012, Hanni submitted her application to participate in the ninth season of the German adaptation of the American Idol series, which is known as Deutschland sucht den Superstar. It was on April 28th, 2012 that he made it to the final. In that competition, he faced off against Daniele Negroni and emerged victorious, receiving 52.85 percent of the votes cast by the crowd.
When that happened, Hanni was the only minor and also the first person from a country other than Germany to win the DSDS. At the end of the competition, he was awarded a recording deal with Universal Music Group in addition to 500,000 Euros. Furthermore, both he and Negroni, who came in second place, were awarded a vehicle and driving instruction course certificate.
The song “Don’t Think About Me” was Hanni’s first single and was also the tune that she used to crown herself on May 2, 2012. Within the first four days of its release, the song achieved gold status in Switzerland, and it also made its debut at the top of the single charts in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. It was an immediate hit.
With this achievement, Hanni became the first Swiss person to ever reach the top spot on the German Singles Charts after a span of 52 years. Over the course of its chart run, “Don’t Think About Me” accomplished sales of more than 100,000 copies.
