Early Coaching: In 1973, Brown started working as a graduate assistant coach at Florida State. Before taking a job as a head coach, he worked as an assistant coach at a number of universities, including LSU, Iowa State, Memphis State, and Southern Mississippi.
North Carolina (First Tenure): Brown’s first significant achievement occurred when he was a coach at the University of North Carolina (UNC) from 1988 to 1997. He changed the course of the program, guiding the Tar Heels to many bowl games and placing them in the top 10 during his last season.
First Head Coaching Jobs: In 1983, he took a head coaching position at Appalachian State. From 1985 to 1987, he was a coach at Tulane University.
Texas Longhorns: The University of Texas, where Brown served as a coach from 1998 until 2013, is where he gained the greatest notoriety. With a dramatic victory over USC in the Rose Bowl—widely regarded as one of the best college football games ever played—he guided the Longhorns to a national title in 2005. Texas became into a dominant team under his direction, often placing in the top 10 and taking home several Big 12 titles.
Return to North Carolina: Following a short break, Brown resumed coaching in 2019 and took the lead at UNC once again. He brought immediate revitalization to the program, guiding them to a prestigious bowl game and restoring UNC’s standing as an ACC contender.
