With the background of the Atlanta Child Murders that occurred between 1979 and 1981, Jones’s debut book, Leaving Atlanta (2002), is a coming-of-age narrative told from the perspectives of three different characters. LaTasha Baxter, Rodney Green, and Octavia Fuller are the three youngsters who, during the course of the book, provide their points of view.
During the time when Jones was a graduate student at Arizona State University, she wrote this book, which is based on her experiences as a youngster living in Atlanta during that time period. This work was awarded the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for Debut Fiction in the year 2003. A film option for the film Leaving Atlanta has been obtained by Aletha Spann, who is affiliated with 30Nineteen Productions.
In addition, The Untelling takes place in Atlanta. The book, which was referred to be Jones’s “deep-felt second novel” by Publishers Weekly, investigates the process by which the heroine comes to grips with the death of significant members of her family when she was a kid, and does so before being forced to redefine herself once again when she is in her mid-twenties. 2005 was the year that it was honored with the Lillian Smith Book Award.

The Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for Debut Fiction, the Lifetime Achievement Award in Fine Arts from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, the United States Artist Fellowship, the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and the Radcliffe Institute Bunting Fellowship are some of the honors that Jones has been honored with. In 2016, her book, Silver Sparrow, was included in the collection of classics that is known as the NEA Big Read Library.
In addition to that, she is a member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers, and in 2018, she was inducted into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame. In February of 2018, Oprah Winfrey made the announcement that Jones’s novel An American Marriage was the most recent book club selection she had chosen.
