Career Evolution –

The middle of the 1990s marked the beginning of West’s early career as a producer. He started by providing beats mostly for emerging local musicians across the Chicago region. It was at the age of nineteen that he was given his first formal production credits. He was responsible for producing eight songs on Grav’s first album, Down to Earth, which was released in 1996.

Grav is an underground rapper located in Chicago. 1998 was the year when West became the first producer to be signed to the Hip Hop management and production firm. Since 1978, Gee Roberson and Kyambo “Hip-Hop” Joshua have been the founders of the company. The role of a ghost producer for Deric “D-Dot” Angelettie was played by West for a period of time.

West was unable to produce a solo album because of his relationship with Angelettie. As a result, he established the Go-Getters, a hip hop group that included him along with other Chicago locals such as GLC, Timmy G, Really Doe, and Arrowstar. Through West’s firm, Konman Productions, the Go-Getters published their first and only studio album, titled World Record Holders, in 1999.

This album was released independently that year. The latter part of the 1990s was spent by West working as a producer for a number of different musical groups. The third track on Foxy Brown’s second studio album, Chyna Doll (1999), which became the second hip-hop album by a female rapper to reach the top spot on the US Billboard 200 list, was produced by him.
